Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church
Welcome to the Hellenic Fest website of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Newport, RI.
St. Spyridon Church is within the Metropolis of Boston, which is part of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America – one of the daughter Churches of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. St. Spyridon is the only Eastern Orthodox church on Aquidneck Island, and as such, serves the needs of all Orthodox Christians of the island and its surrounding communities.
Our Church
At St. Spyridon, we conduct the full cycle of Sunday services, commencing with Great Vespers on Saturday evenings, through Orthros (Matins) and the Divine Liturgy on Sunday mornings. All feasts of our Lord, the Theotokos, and of the major saints.
Our Priest
Fr. Aaron Walker serves our beloved parish of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church. We value the opportunity to learn and grow in our spiritual faith with Fr. Aaron as our guide and teacher.
Our History
By 1896 four Greeks arrived in the city of Newport, all from the island of Skiathos. Drawn by the lure of the sea, they made a living in Newport’s small but thriving fishing industry. Many Greeks soon followed these earliest Hellenic settlers to Newport
Our Festival
Each summer Saint Spyridon hosts Hellenic Fest. The community works very hard to pull the event together, our largest fundraiser of the year, and it is a wonderful opportunity for our church to showcase our rich Greek culture.
Our Saint
St. Spyridon, patron Saint of Corfu was a Cypriot bishop born in 270. During the last years of his life he performed a great number of miracles, which was the reason why people considered him a Saint before his death. His feast day is celebrated December 12th.
Our Future
In 2015 Saint Spyridon celebrated our 100th year as a parish in Newport, RI. As generations before us have celebrated, our generations and those generations coming look forward to celebrating another 100 years!
